Department/Office Profile of Public Health Engineering Department Meghalaya

The Public Health Engineering Department of Government of Meghalaya was created under the Chief Engineer, PWD (R&B) and functioned under PWD (R&B) PHE, till 1st April, 1972. This Department functioned as a separate wing of the PWD (R&B) headed by an Additional Chief Public Health Engineer, Meghalaya, Shillong. Initially, the Public Health Engineering Department was headed be the Additional Chief Public Health Engineer with 1 (one) Executive Engineer, (PHE) Investigation and Planning with 2 (two) SDOs (PHE) attached to the office of the Additional Chief Public Health Engineer, Meghalaya, Shillong. Subsequently, the post of Additional Chief Public Health Engineer, Meghalaya, Shillong was up graded to the post of Chief Public Health Engineer, Meghalaya, Shillong with effect from 2nd of April, 1972. The Public Health Engineering Department started functioning independently and became a separate Department.

       The Chief Public Health Engineer which was later re-designated as Chief Engineer, PHE., was also appointed as Ex-Officio Additional Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, PHE Department with effect from the December, 1973, with separate Secretary for Public Health Engineering Department.

Organizational Setup of PHE Department.

For formulation and implementation of Schemes including supervision on Operation & Maintenance of Schemes, PHE Directorate is headed by Chief Engineer, assisted by 4 Addl. Chief Engineers manning separate Zones viz., Zone-I, Zone-II, Zone-III and Sanitation Cell, 7 Superintending Engineers heading the PHE Circles, 21 Executive Engineers manning the PHE Divisions and 41 Sub-Divisional Officers heading the Sub-Divisional Offices.

       Meghalaya Water & Sanitation Support Organisation (MWSSO) has been set up as per Government Notification No. PHE.106/2009/122 Dated 07.02.2011 and is responsible for taking up the support activities such as Evaluation Studies, Impact Assessment Studies, R&D activities including IEC, CCDU etc. This organization is headed by a Chief Engineer, assisted by 2 Addl. Chief Engineers, 2 Executive Engineers & 2 Assistant Engineers.
