On the occasion, Chief Legal Aid Defence Counsel, East Jaintia Hills District, Smti Rimaya Manar spoke on the importance of the “Protect Today, Secure Tomorrow” initiative, stating that while citizens enjoy rights, they equally have responsibilities towards protecting the environment. She also noted that clearing of forests for developmental activities has led to serious environmental degradation and poor air quality which is also a global issue. Stressing the need for collaborative action, she encouraged every household to plant at least one tree to contribute towards cleaner air and a healthier environment. Furthermore, while speaking on the causes of water and soil pollution in the region due to various economic activities, Smti. Manar pointed out that littering, particularly of plastic and non-biodegradable wastes also causes long-term environmental damage. She encouraged proper waste segregation and suggested that collected plastic wastes be sold to recycling units for reuse
