The Labour as Administrative Department was started right from the inception of the State of Meghalaya in 1972 after bifurcated from the State of Assam. The aims of setting up of Labour was to promote the work culture in organized and unorganized sectors of workers. Labour Department is responsible to carry out the laid down norms and standards on matters relating to Industrial relations, cooperation between Labour and management, regulation of wages, conditions of work and safety, labour and management, regulation of wages, conditions of work and safety, labour welfare and employment social security or workers etc, which appear in the Union and Concurrent lists of the 7th Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
The Labour Department is entrusted with responsibility to oversee and coordinating the function of the Directorates comprising of Directorate of Employment & Craftsmen Training, Labour Commissioner, Inspectorate of Boiler & Factories, Commandant of Civil Task Force and Administrative Medical Officer (ESI) and to ensure implementation of governmental procedures. As such as objectives/purposes of Labour Department is for handling of industrial relation, contract Labour, Inter-State Migrant Workmen, Enforcement of various labour laws, promotion of labour welfare and employment and provide social security to the workers.
Other InformationsThe Labour Department normally confines itself to general policy, direction, legislation, Assembly business, inter-departmental matters and review and assessment of execution of policy and schemes. The day-to-day execution and implementation of the Schemes are normally left to the Directorates.
