The Great Black Vein - Aporia agathon (Gray)

Colour : Black with white streaks
A somewhat common butterfly of regions of low elevations. Recorded from Nongpoh during September expanding and meeting at the outer edge of the wing to form a narrow black border. Wings with several white streaks. Entire basal half of the upper surface of fore wing dusted with black. This butterfly can be found flying in fairly open and highly wooded areas. Recorded from Upper Shillong, Mylliem and Barapani during April- June.

The Chocolate Albatross - Appias lyncida ( Cramer )

Colour : White
A somewhat common butterfly of 55- 70 mm. Upper surface of both wings of males white with inwardly toothed black markings on the outer edge. Under surface of hind wing bright yellow with abroad chocolate outer border. Upper surface of' female fore wing black with four white streaks on the middle area and the upper surface of the hind wing blackish except for the whitish middle area. Under surface of hind wing whitish or yellowish with a broad dusky colouration on the outer edge. This butterfly is generally found in wet, hilly forest areas, especially in jungle clearings and around woodland streams. Recorded from Nongpoh during August.

The Spot Puffin - Appias pandione ( Geyer )

Colour : White
A somewhat common butterfly of 55-80 mm. Fore wing pointed, more rounded in females. Upper surface of male fore wing white with black upper margin and outer edge and also with a black spot towards the middle area and one white spot each on the apex and outer edge in the black area. Upper surface of hind wing with black spots on the outer edge. Female more or less similar to male but with three white spots on the outer border of tore wing and a very broad black border on the hind wing. This butterfly is found generally in hilly terrains Recorded from Shillong during July.

The Common Emigrant - Catopsilia crocale (Cramer)

Colour : Yellow white
A very common butterfly of 55-75 mm. Upper surface of the wings pale yellow or white. Basal area of male and female usually sulphur yellow, without any marking on the under side of both sexes. Outer edge, tip and upper margin of the upper surface of the male fore wing narrowly black. Upper surface of the female fore wing much more broadly black on the outer edge, tip and upper margin. Upper surface of the hind wing with a black border on the outer edge.
Antennae black. This butterfly is a very rapid flier. Recorded from Shillong during May and from Barapani during June and October.

The Mottled Emigrant - Catopsilia pyranthe (Linnaeus)

Colour : Greenish white
A common butterfly of 50- 70 mm. Upper surface of the wings chalky white or greenish. Upper fore wing with or without a spot in the middle and apex and outer edge with continuous black border narrowing towards the lower comer. Upper hind wing either without any marking or with markings forming a continuous line on the outer edge. Under surface of hind wing with closely arranged fine brown or green lines. Female similar to male but with broader black markings and a black border along the upper margin; also with a larger spot on the middle of the fore wing. Recorded from Nongpoh and Shillong during August and Sept.

The Dark Clouded Yellow - Colias electo fieldi Menetries

Colour : Deep orange yellow
A common butterfly of 54-65 mm. Upper surface of wings deep orange yellow, males with broad unspotted black outer border. Upper surface of fore wing with a prominent black spot. Female similar to male but with the black wing border spotted with orange yellow. Upper surface of the female hind wing heavily dusted with black. In the hills, this butterfly is found throughout the year. Recorded from Shillong, Mawiong, Umtyngar and Mawphlang during April -August and December.

The Red-Breast Jezebel - Delias acalis (Godart)

Colour : Ashy Grey
A somewhat common butterfly of 80-100 mm. Upper surface of fore wing black with greyish streaks. Upper surface of the hind wing black with greyish white and yellow streaks and also with a large red patch on the basal area: This butterfly can be immediately recognised by the red patch at the basal area on the upper surface of the hind wing. Recorded from Nongpoh and Shillong during October.

The Red-Base Jezebel - Delias pasithoe (Linnaeus)

Colour : Black
A common butterfly of 70-90 mm. Upper surface of the wing mostly black and fore wing with greyish white stripes on the margin and the middle area of the wing. Upper surface of the hind wing with greyish white spots and a broad greyish white band on the centre joining with a large yellow area on the inner edge. Upper surface of hind wing also with a white spot in the middle area. Under surface of the hind wing yellow with black veins and black outer margin. Basal area with a large red patch bordered with black. Recorded from Shillong, Umtham, Umran and Nongpoh during August -December.

The Hill Jezebel - Delias belladonna (Fabricius)

Colour : Black
A common butterfly of 70-96 mm. Upper surface of wings black with white to pale cream coloured spots. Upper surface of hind wing with a large yellow spot towards the base on the upper margin. Under surface of hind wing black with several yellow and white spots. Recorded from Shi1long during July.

The Red-Spot Jezebel - Delias descombesi (Boisduval)

Colour : White or black and white
A common butterfly of 65-90 mm. Upper surface of male wings white with upper margin and outer edge of the fore wing narrowly black and tip more broadly black. Upper surface of fore wing of female brownish black with a white spot in the middle area and row of pale spots on the margin. Under surface of the hind wing of males and females yellow with a long red patch in the basal area and with a black outer border bearing large yellow spots. This butterfly is generally found at warm hill valleys. Recorded from Umran, Barapani, Shillong and Umtyngar during June -November and February.

The "Painted Jezebel - Delias hyparete (Linnaeus)

Colour : White with black veins
A somewhat common butterfly of 72-88 mm. Upper surface of wings white., but the apex and veins of the forewing darkened. Hind wing at times with a narrow dark border. Under surface of the hind wing yellow basally and dorsally, middle area white, veins black, with broad margin outwardly but not inwardly bordered with black.
Generally found in warm lower valleys. Recorded from Shillong during June.

The Three Spot Grass Yellow-Eurema blanda silhetana {Wallace)

Colour : Yellow
A common butterfly of 40-50 mm. Wings yellow, markings very much variable. Under surface of fore wing always with three small black spots in the cell. This butterfly flutters among stems of grass and low bushes in grassy places. Recorded from Shillong, Umran and Dympep during September and October.

The Small Grass Yellow - Eurema brigitta rubella {Wallace}

Colour : Yellow
A very common bright yellow butterfly of 30-40 mm. Apex and outer edge of upper surface of fore wing broadly black with the inner edge of the black evenly rounded. Upper surface of the hind wing with the outer edge broadly or narrowly black. Under surface of the fore wing with two minute black spots at the end of the cell. Habits similar to the three spot grass yellow. Recorded from Laitkor, Dympep and Mawpat during July and September and October.

The Common Grass Yellow Eurema hecabe (Linnaeus)

Colour : Yellow
A very common butterfly of 40-50 mm. Wings bright yellow with the apex and outer edge of the wings broadly black and with the Inner edge of the black excavated. Fore wing with two black spots (one or both of which may be absent) on the under surface in the 'cell. Upper surface of hind wing with narrow black border. Recorded from Shillong during July and September.

The Spotless Grass Yellow Eurema leata (Boisduval)

Colour : Yellow
A very common bright yellow butterfly of 30-45 mm. Upper surface of wings bright yellow. Fore wing apex pointed and outer edge sharply cut and straight. Apex and outer edge of fore wing broadly black. Dark margin of the upper surface of the hind wing reduced or absent. Under surface of the hind wing pale yellow and densely shaded with brown and pink scales, with two straight darker brown streaks. Recorded from Mawpat, Lawsohtun, Shillong Peak, Shillong, Laitkor, Dympep, Umran and Umsning during June- October.

The Yellow Orange Tip - Ixias pyrene (Linnaeus)

Colour : Yellow with orange band on the fore wing or white with white band on the fore wing
A common butterfly of 50- 70 mm. Upper surface of the male wing yellow with the apical half of the fore wing black, bearing a large orange band. Upper surface of hind wing yellow, with a black border. Upper surface of female wing white or yellow, with the band on the fore wing white, if the upper surface is white. In female, the apical band is reduced in size and bear two black spots. This butterfly inhabits scrub jungles at the foot of hills: Recorded from Barapani during June.

The Large Cabbage White Pieris brassicae nepalensis (Doubleday)

Colour : White
A very common buttet11y of 65-75 mm. This butterfly is a major pest of cabbage. Wings white with a black apex on the fore wing and apical spot on the hind wing of male. Under surface of the hind wing pale yellowish. Female similar to male but with two additional spots on the upper surface of the fore wing. This butterfly frequents open and lightly wooded areas. Recorded from Shillong throughout the year.

The Indian Cabbage White Pieris canidia (Sparrrnan)

Colour : White
A very common white butterfly of 45-60 mm. Upper surface of fore wing of male with the apex black and inwardly toothed, and with a black spot in the middle area. Upper surface of the hind wing with a black spot in the apex and with black dots on the outer edge. Female similar to male with an additional spot on the upper surface of the fore wing. Habits similar to the large cabbage white. Recorded from Shillong during June -September.

The Green Veined White Pieris napi (Linnaeus)

Colour : White
A very common butterfly of 50- 60 mm. Wings white in males with strongly darkened veins; with or without a spot on the fore wing. Female wing yellow with veins much darkened. This butterfly is commonly found in woodlands especially near streams. Recorded from Shillong, Laitkor and Umran during March, May, September and October.

The Spotted Saw Tooth - Prioneris thestylis (Doubleday}

Colour : White or brownish black
A somewhat common butterfly of 70-90 mm. Upper surface of the wing white with white streaked or white spotted broad black apex. Fore wing pointed. Female wing brownish black and a series of four small prominent white spots in an oblique line on the fore wing at the end of the cell. This butterfly can be seen visiting flowers and congregating at damp patches. Recorded from Barapani during October.
